The Main Staircase

In the heart of Maria Adelaide, the marble staircase that once graciously welcomed Queen Margherita and King Umberto I now invites you to relive an unparalleled era of magnificence, where history and beauty intertwine in a timeless work of art.

The Main Staircase

Imagine to be dragged back in time, in a period in which greatness and elegance ruled over. It’s January 1881 and Maria Adelaide, the apple of our eyes, is ready to welcome two special guests: Queen Margherita and King Umberto I. But there’s a little problem: the main staircase, although fascinating, is too narrow for the royalties. Try to imagine the scene: the rulers, who are used to gracefully go up the stairs of the royal palaces, are forced to proceed in a straight queue. An inconvenience that doesn’t go unnoticed, so the school headmasters take an oath to solve the issue.
Ten years passed, a good amount of time to transform a promise into reality. In 1891, engineer Ignazio Greco gives life to an ambitious project that puts together art and architecture in a wonderful work. Finally, the big day arrives. Queen Margherita returns to Maria Adelaide and astonishment paints her face. In front of her stands a magnificent and big staircase, a work of art entirely wrapped in Billiemi marble, a valuable material that reflects the light with an elegance like no other.
The staircase is a real symphony of shapes: the columns rise graciously, intertwining with their rib vaults that embrace the balconies. Every detail is carefully taken care of, and the wide windows that surround it offer a splendid view of “the garden of the roses”, a piece of heaven where nature and architecture merge together, creating a perfect harmony.
Today, by walking on these same steps, you can have a unique experience, re-living those memorable moments that made the history of Maria Adelaide. Every step you take will bring you closer to a past full of charm and stories to tell. Here, where history links with beauty, you’ll be witnesses of a legacy that keeps on living and inspiring.
